About the Richmond Chapter
The Richmond chapter of ISCEBS was officially incorporated on January 7, 1994. Sue Schick, who had earned her designation in 1987, approached ISCEBS about starting a chapter here in 1993, and was referred to Margaret Mainzer, who was also interested. Shortly afterward, Sue and Margaret called the first organizational meeting at the Wm. M. Mercer office. The initial costs of getting the chapter off the ground were underwritten by Johnson & Higgins and Wm. M. Mercer, providing meeting space and paying incorporation and postage costs. After six months of collecting signatures, filing incorporation papers and other essential paperwork, the chapter was officially launched. Attempts to start a chapter had been made in the 80's by Jackie Jackson, Duncan Blankinship, Bill Campbell and Emory Weisiger, but Richmond did not have critical mass until the early 90's. Sue was the chapter's first President, along with charter officers Connie Madison, Margaret Mainzer, Duncan Blankinship and Ronnie Milligan. Sue remains as a member to this day. The chapter extends its condolences to the family of Duncan Blankinship, who passed away on August 16, 2015.
Since then, the chapter has grown significantly to its current membership of approximately 45 employee benefit professionals, with employers, carriers, brokers and consultants, banks, wellness companies, and others represented. Our membership's diversity of backgrounds provides a wide range of perspectives and audiences for our educational sessions, as well as for the leadership of the chapter. Like the International Society, the chapter is a non-profit entity.
Over the years, we have provided CEBS designees and CEBS students with meaningful educational programs, leadership opportunities, and networking options for the mutual benefit of the chapter, its members and guests. The chapter is now in a strong position to continue its mission of being the premier employee benefits organization in the Richmond area as we continue to flourish and grow.
Our board typically meets on the first Thursday of each month, with the chapter's annual meeting held in November. We annually offer full day and half day educational sessions in June and September on a rotating basis for continuing education credit. Throughout the year we also offer breakfast and luncheon sessions on various pertinent benefit topics. Chapter meetings are held at the Westwood Club. Members and guests are welcome at all of our sessions.
The chapter has a dedicated group established at LinkedIn, for those interested in networking with other chapter members and other employee benefit professionals. You will find icons to take you to our LinkedIn group at the bottom right of each page on this site. There are also groups for ISCEBS and IFEBP.
We invite you to take an active role in the chapter through attendance at our programs, and also through service on the chapter's board of directors. If you are interested in serving, please contact us! It's a very rewarding opportunity.
