OCTOBER 2018
Member Spotlight: Doug Daniluk, CEBS and Fellow
Current Employer: Willis Towers Watson Background: My first job out of college was with the Wyatt Co. in Cleveland, OH doing pension actuarial work for six years. I then went to Nestle USA for 13 years where I was responsible for the administration of their pension plans and, towards the end, their health and welfare plans. My family and I then moved to Richmond, VA where I joined Circuit City and was responsible for their savings plans and (frozen) pension plan. Just one year later, Circuit City filed for bankruptcy, but I was fortunate to be rehired by what had become Watson Wyatt, and has since become Towers Watson and now Willis Towers Watson. For nine years, I was responsible for the company’s pension and savings plans. I recently transitioned to the business side, consulting with clients to help address their pension administration needs. Favorite Richmond restaurants: My wife and I only eat out occasionally so no particular favorites. However, I think she’s gradually becoming a vegetarian and I sense that she’s trying to convert me as well. Not happening. Activities, Interests: I enjoy outdoor activities and most sporting events, whether as a spectator or occasional participant. Now that our twins are off to college at the University of Virginia, my wife and I are spending more time together exploring Charlottesville and Richmond and also trying to improve our golf game. What got you into the benefits field? A recruiter for the Wyatt Co. contacted me in college where I was studying to become a math teacher. I interviewed and took the job after graduation and in the rather circuitous route described above, I am still with the company today. Early in my career, I once told someone that I was an actuary and they responded, “Oh, you work with birds.” I said, “No, that’s an aviary.” How has the CEBS designation helped you? During my initial years in consulting, I passed several of the Society of Actuaries exams, but when I transitioned to in-house administration, I started taking the CEBS exams. I found the material to be relevant, interesting, and applicable to my responsibilities, both tactical and strategic. I believe that my CEBS designation and Fellowship status have had a positive impact on my career as they convey a strong competence in, and commitment to, employee benefits. |
